The Woodlawn Ensemble presents “Last Letters”, their 6th concert, with string music by Janacek, Golijov, and little-known early baroque composers.
The first half begins with selections from Leos Janacek’s piano cycle, “On an Overgrown Path” arranged for string quartet. His second string quartet, “Intimate Letters” follows - a piece that takes us through love, lust, passion, and rejection.
The second half features Osvaldo Golijov’s “Last Round”, written for dueling string quartets and bass. In his own words, “The bows fly in the air as inverted legs in a crisscrossed choreography, always attracting and repelling each other, always in danger of clashing, always avoiding it with the immutability that can only be acquired by transforming hot passion into pure pattern.” The piece is surrounded by smaller baroque works - sonatas by early Italian composers Valentini and Bertali and the evening finishes with Locke’s mysterious “Curtain Tune” from his music for Shakespeare’s play The Tempest.
