Transfigured Night

  • St. John’s Episcopal Church 1 Roanoke Avenue Boston, MA, 02130 United States (map)

The Woodlawn Ensemble celebrates a year of music-making in JP! Join us for an evening of string works by Stravinsky, Mozart, Mahler, and Schoenberg.

The program begins with Stravinsky’s three pieces for string quartet. It’s a sharp, percussive, concentrated, and maybe even ancient-sounding work for four voices. Mozart’s “Dissonance” quartet is one of his most daring works, known for it’s mysterious and unstable opening, it challenges our notion of an 18th century string quartet. And even still, gives us the charming, inventive, and warm Mozart we have grown to love.

Mahler’s “Urlicht”, or “Primordial Light”, is originally found at the end of his “Resurrection” symphony. Here, set for string sextet (Arr. Judson), it is a moment of spiritual stillness and searching. We end with Schoenberg’s “Verklarte Nacht”, “Transfigured Night”, for string sextet. Based off of the Richard Dehmel poem by the same name, it is music about forgiveness and love, darkness to light.
